Lavender oil is also known as blue magic. It is used by aromatherapists as a first aid kit in a bottle. I always carry a bottle of pure lavender essential oil with me for that very purpose. As a first aid kit. It is marvellous in the way it lessens the pain of a wound and more importantly, it heals the wound without leaving a mark.
I'm accident prone. Once, I skewered my hand with a wooden skewer while eating fruit. Don't ask me how. My mom said I got into the most ridiculous accidents as a child. I actually bit a glass and had to be sent to a doctor to remove glass shards from my mouth, and that's just on of the many scrapes I got myself into. Anyway, back to the skewer. The hole bled profusely and hurt horribly. I poured lavender oil into the hole. After a few minutes, the bleeding stop and the pain was more bearable. An hour later, it hardly bothered me. When the wound healed, it didn't leave a mark. In fact, none of the wounds I treated with lavender oil left any marks once healed.
That's how aromatherapy started. The father of aromatherapy burnt his hand in the lab and dipped the injured hand into the nearest inert liquid, which happened to be lavender oil. The burn healed quickly and left no scar. He was shocked and investigated the properties of the oil and started the study of aromatherapy.
There are many varieties of lavender. To an untrained nose, they all smell the same. Those who can tell the difference would find that french lavender has the finest scent. The best lavender to use would be true lavender. That's the soothing scent that is used traditionally as a cosmetic water, and insect repellent. This is also the one used for boils, acne, abcesses, inflammation, aches and pains, rheumatism, sprains, insect bites, stings, lice, wounds, sunburn, bruises, colic, nausea, flatulence, ashthma, bronchitis, sore throat, flu, drpression, cystitis, insomnia, PMS, shock.. among many other conditions. And it works. That's why they call lavender blue magic.
Lavender has a clean scent. I love lavender soap. Try using lavender soap in the shower after a stressful day. It is wonderfully relaxing. Better yet, sprinkle lavender flowers into warm water in the bath tub and soak in it. Let the stress melt away.
True lavender plants aren't as hardy as spike lavender. Hence, spike lavender is often used in cleansing agents, room sprays and insecticides as it is cheaper than true lavender. Its scent is similar to true lavender, though with piercing, camphorus properties.
Lavandin is a happy compromise as it combines the properties of true lavender with the hardiness of spike lavender. This too is often used in lavender soaps, lavender candles, and other commercial lavender products.
The scent of lavender is soothing and refined. It reminds one of an English gentleman, or a well brought up lady, or a fine home. It smells clean and elegant.
