Jasmine is a scent associated with romance and seduction. The tiny white jasmine flower produces a sweet intoxicating aroma that is stronger at night than by the day. Although the flower looks delicate, the oil extracted from it is potent. Jasmine essential oil is known as the king of the oils.
Throughout the ages, jasmine has been used in perfumery for its aphrodisiac properties. Cleopatra was said to have perfumed the sails of her ship with jasmine when she sailed to meet her lover, Mark Anthony.
Jasmine is valued in aromatherapy for its relaxing properties as well as its aphrodisiac ones. On top of that, skin care that contains jasmine is excellent for dry and irritated skin. Jasmine oil has been used traditionally in massages to ease labor during childbirth.
Because of its sensual scent, Jasmine is valued in perfumery. Yet in spite of modern technology, jasmine oil cannot be made artificially. Not all the components of the oil have been identified so synthetic imitations of the jasmine oil are somewhat lacking.
While most essential oils may be extracted through steam distillation, jasmine's delicate perfume is usually extracted through enfleurage as distillation yields so little oil, the resulting essential oil tends to be too pricey for commercial use. The delicate white flowers are harvested at night, when the scent is strongest. These flowers are spread out on square glass trays that contain lard or olive oil to absorb the perfume. These trays are layered on top of each other to prevent evaporation of the precious essence.
Jasmine essential oil is so potent a drop of it goes a long way. You can add a drop of pure jasmine essential oil to 5 ml (1 teaspoon) of sweet almond oil, olive oil or any carrier oil and use that as a perfume. A drop of that diluted oil behind the ears and on your wrists would be enough as a personal perfume that is especially wonderful at night. Or better yet, wear a fragrance that contains the scent of jasmine for a more sensual impact.
